Our Story

Konnichiwa! Welcome to Hakkō House, where tradition meets innovation, born in our wonderful home town of Somerset's Frome.


We're not just a Japanese restaurant; authenticity is our heartbeat, bringing you recipes passed through generations of our ancestors.


At Hakkō House, family is the core of everything we do. Our eldest daughter proudly claims the self-titled role of ‘Chief Taster,' a testament to the generations of our family where food is not just cooked and eaten, but lovingly developed over the years, creating a tapestry of flavours that has defined what we do.


From our roots starting as a Friday Fromie takeaway to conquering markets, festivals, and catering for private events, hosting pop ups and supper clubs, Hakkō House has always been a labor of love.


In the summer of '23, we unveiled our first ever, unique restaurant — a converted shipping container nestled in the woodlands, described by Country Living UK as being “beamed straight from Kyoto”. At Hakkō House, it's not just a dining experience; it's a journey into the heart of Japanese cuisine, possibly the only restaurant of its kind in the entire UK.


At Hakkō House, we take pride in being the pioneers of a Japanese culinary escapade. We celebrate the art of fermentation, this wholesome probiotic goodness adds a healthy twist to every dish we create. Hakkō, はっこ, after all, means fermentation in Japanese. It's not just food; it's a celebration of life and well-being.


Each dish we make is tried, tested and perfected until it’s a masterpiece. Dive in to the artistry of our sushi platters, savour the handmade perfection of our gyoza, each one lovingly created. Experience the irresistible tenderness of our fried Japanese chicken karaage. Our udon noodles are a harmonious blend of clean flavours, while our tempura boasts a delightful combination of light and crispy textures. Explore the array of our tsukemono pickles, and Japanese salads where we use ancient techniques including koji-marinating to ensure we have simple, umami-rich taste. We meticulously select the best ingredients because we care deeply about our suppliers. Behind every bite is our commitment to excellence.
